Harvesting Garlic at Birchfield Farm: A Labor of Love ❤️🧄

After a whirlwind couple of days in the field, we’re happy to report that garlic harvest at Birchfield Farm is complete—and we beat the rain doing it! 🌧️💪
Every single bulb in our garlic patch is harvested by hand—no big machines, just good old-fashioned hard work, a few pairs of muddy boots, and a whole lot of love. It’s a slow and satisfying process: loosening the soil, gently pulling each stalk, and laying the garlic out to dry in the open air. The reward? Crates full of fresh, fragrant bulbs bursting with flavor and potential.
But the job doesn't stop there.
Once the garlic is out of the ground, we carefully clean and sort each bulb by hand. Dirt is brushed away, roots are trimmed, and stalks are bundled up for curing. We sort the garlic based on size and quality—some destined for seed garlic, some for the kitchen, and others reserved for our beautiful braided bundles (which are being wrapped up as we speak—pun fully intended! 😉).
It’s a labor-intensive process, but one we care deeply about. We believe that whether you're planting a fall garden or adding rich flavor to your favorite dish, you deserve the best garlic we can grow.
This year’s harvest features two of our favorite varieties:
Svea – Big, bold bulbs with a clean, sharp flavor. Great for planting or cooking.
Music – A customer favorite with a rich, full-bodied garlic taste and easy-to-peel cloves.
Our garlic is currently curing and will be ready for delivery in late August. You can pre-order your seed garlic, culinary bulbs, or braids now on our website to make sure you don’t miss out:👉 www.thefarmatbirchfield.com

Not Sure Which Variety is Right for You?
We grow two hard-neck garlic varieties here at Birchfield Farm: Music and Svea. Both are flavorful and beautiful, but they each have their own unique characteristics.

🎵 Music Garlic 🎵
Look: Large, full cloves with white to rosy skins
Flavor: Rich and bold; slightly sweet when roasted
Perfect for: Roasting, sautéing, and fall planting (excellent cold-hardy variety)
Why We Love It: Easy to peel and stores beautifully

🧄 Svea Garlic 🧄
Look: Smaller cloves with striking purple striping
Flavor: Spicy when raw, mellow-sweet when cooked
Perfect for: Raw dishes and cooking that calls for a garlicky punch
Why We Love It: It’s a unique heirloom variety from Sweden—less common, incredibly flavorful, and always a hit with our food-loving friends
We’re so grateful to share this season with you. Whether you’re a home cook, gardener, or garlic enthusiast, we can’t wait to get this year’s harvest into your hands.
As always, thank you for supporting our small farm. Here's to a flavorful garlic season ahead!
